What is the Ruhr-Israel Cyber Activator?
The Ruhr-Israel Cyber Activator (RICA) brings German and Israeli students together in a three-month program to solve actual cybersecurity challenges for companies from the Ruhr Metropolis. The challenges are in areas such as medical technology, media, legal technology or industry 4.0.
In an in-depth opening week in Bochum und Essen (23.03.- 27.03.2020) cross cultural teams are formed to work in collaboration with the companies. After a ten-week virtual work phase in the home countries, a three-day event to present the results will take place in Israel (01.06.- 03.06.2020).
Holistic and Secure Communication Interface for Buildings
Develop a communication interface based on technologies used in vonovia buildings as well as emerging technologies. Apply the security by design principle in practice.
Successful attack on the company’s video platform
Plan strategies to attack the video platform. Test whatever you can imagine from DDOS over injections to totally unknown attacks. Find attacks that are not recognized by alerts nor monitored.
Lawfirm IT-Security Check-Application
Develop an application, that detects IT-Security issues in a lawfirm´s IT–infrastructure. Make networks, communication with clients etc. the basis of your solution.
Harm or Charm: A campus wide Bluetooth low energy network
Steal an observer to analyze, copy and/or manipulate the communication or to infiltrate the local wireless network. Next, conquer and occupy power sockets with Bluetooth observers to collect information from passing devices.
What you can expect
In ten weeks you will work in cross cultural teams – connecting German and Israeli cyber security students – to develop solutions for real-world challenges.
The project starts on 23.03.2020 with a kick-off week in the Ruhr area. Here you will get to know your team and work closely with the challenge-provider. Workshops prepare you for the cooperation in intercultural groups and with respect to useful technological tools for a successful work phase.
Afterwards you and your team will exchange ideas digitally for ten weeks and work out a viable solution to the problem.
The highlight for you is the final presentation in Israel in June (01.06.- 03.06.2020). For three days an exciting program awaits you, where you will get to know the local economy as well as the startup and tech-scene in Israel. Finally, you will present your it security solution to companies and partners.
What is expected from you
For the participation in the project your full commitment is required. This includes participation in the workshops in the opening week (which takes place during semester break in March) and the program in Israel in June 2020. During the ten-week work phase you should therefore stick to the agreements with the team and the company representatives. As these are challenges with a cyber security focus, a technical understanding of this area is essential.
What should be your background?
Are you looking for a challenge with direct practical application? Do you enjoy working as a team and would like to get to know the business environment in Israel as well as in the Ruhr Metropolis? Are you interested in applying your it security expertise to the creation of a product or service?
Please fill out the application form (see link below). You will be invited for an interview after the registration deadline has passed. Final selection of applicants is based on the interviews.
The application deadline for German students has been extended until six weeks and ends on 15.02.2020.
